Music distribution vs. music promotion: which do you need first?

Every new artist hits the same fork. Search "music distribution" and an industry tells you distribution is the missing step; search "music promotion" and another industry says the same about promotion. They are different jobs. Distribution puts your track on the shelves — Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and the rest. Promotion is the reason anyone walks to the shelf. Mixing them up is how releases go live everywhere and get heard nowhere.

What distribution actually does

Music distribution platforms — the aggregators — deliver your files and metadata to the streaming stores and collect the royalties. Some charge per release, some take a cut, some have genuinely free tiers; that much of "free music distribution" is real, because it is plumbing, and plumbing can be cheap. What no distributor ships is listeners. The endless "best music distribution" debates are about fees, splits and payout speed — all worth comparing, none of it making a single person press play.

Distribution is shelf space. Promotion is footfall. You need both — just not in the order most people buy them.

What promotion actually does — and what fake promotion sells

Promotion means getting humans to hear the track and react to it. Real promotion produces attentive listens, honest reactions, saves. The fake kind sells the appearance of that: bought plays, bot-stuffed playlists, YouTube music promotion campaigns that promise view counts. Those numbers convert to nothing, they poison your own analytics, and on the big platforms artificial streams can trigger fraud filters that cost you royalties or the track itself.

The order that works: get heard before you ship

The mistake is distributing first and hoping promotion happens after. Flip it — promote the song before release, to people who will tell you the truth. On Youmus every upload earns verified listens through the reciprocity loop — you listen, you are listened to, one for one, guaranteed. The skip curve shows where people bail, the reactions show what lands. Fix what the data flags, and distribute the version that already survived contact with real ears.

To be clear about where we sit: Youmus is not a distributor. We do not deliver to stores and we do not touch royalties. We are the get-heard layer — guaranteed real listens, honest feedback, weekly charts — the step that makes the distribution worth paying for and the promotion worth running.

The release order, in one paragraph

Upload the rough demo. Let the loop promote it to real listeners and read what comes back. Fix, re-test, repeat until the saves start. Then distribute it to the stores — and keep promoting it the same honest way, because a track people finish is the only thing worth putting on every shelf in the world.
